Hotels in Lonely Beach are still largely focusing on the backpacker crowd who made this remote area of Koh Chang famous, although plenty more mid- to high-range resorts are starting to open up. Known locally in Thai as ‘Had Tha Nam’, this one kilometre-long stretch towards the south of Kai Bae Beach was once a deserted and secluded sandy beach known among backpackers as ‘Lonely Beach’. The name eventually sticks and the beach is now known exclusively as ‘Lonely Beach’. Usually the last stop for the shared ‘songtaew’ (pick-up truck taxi), Lonely Beach is similar to other beaches on Koh Chang as it tends to be on the rocky side on the southern end. The best place to swim and get involved in a variety of beach activities lies in the northern part of this area. Though not as ‘lonely’ as it once used to be, Lonely Beach hotels still offer a cheap and peaceful retreat perfect for those who are on a tight budget and wanting to avoid the mainstream crowd.
